Review

David Brown

“Policing the police” is the preoccupation of writer Jed Mercurio’s tension-packed procedural, which revolves around the work of anti-corruption unit AC-12, a fictional force tasked with rooting out corrupt officers.

Originally broadcast on BBC Two, its popularity earned it a transfer to BBC One, where the catchphrases of Superintendent Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) entered the national lexicon. His mission to rid law enforcement of “bent coppers” is aided by loyal subordinates Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) and Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure), while guest stars including Keeley Hawes and Lennie James play their potentially crooked adversaries.

A long-running conspiracy arc concerning the identity of a high-ranking rotten apple, known only as “H”, helped turn Line of Duty into a TV phenomenon.
